Who are we?

Aotea, also known as Great Barrier Island, is the ancestral home of Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea.

As tangata whenua, we proudly hold the mana whenua (authority over the land) and mana moana (authority over the sea) of Aotea, Hauturu-a-Toi, Pokohinu, Rakitū, Rangiahua, and the surrounding islands, rocky outcrops, and seascapes.

Our whānau continue to live on Aotea and its outlying islands, with a papakāinga (community settlement) in Katherine Bay, within a native reserve. Despite the challenges we’ve faced, including questionable land acquisitions, breaches of the Treaty, and forced resettlements, we remain strong and deeply connected to our whenua and moana.
